Sox right fielder not dying for attention

Article tools

White Sox right fielder Jermaine Dye and Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee are both 6-foot-5-inch, mild-mannered sluggers with similar statistics this season. But Dye doesn't seem bothered that Lee gets more attention for playing for a more visible team in Chicago.

"It doesn't matter to me," Dye said with a laugh. "As long as we win, that's what it's about. It's not about being hyped up in the papers or anything like that. I just try and go out and let my numbers speak for themselves. If you guys want me to be hyped up, then you can write about me."

Entering Sunday night's game, Dye was hitting .306 with 18 homers and 49 RBIs. Lee was hitting .298 with 15 homers and 51 RBIs.

Theriot returns to give ailing Cubs a hand

Ryan Theriot returned to the lineup on Sunday after missing the first two games of the City Series with a sore hand and went 0-for-3.

With Alfonso Soriano, Reed Johnson and Carlos Zambrano all going on the disabled list this month, the Cubs have probably experienced more key injuries in June than in all of 2007 combined.

"Obviously, the injuries probably had an effect on us a little bit," Theriot said. "Obviously, when you lose your ace and [Soriano], it's going to affect you a lot. But I think the mark of a good team is guys can pick each other up, go in there and win ballgames anyway. We have won a few games since both of those guys went down, and we'll have them back soon and get back on track."

Guillen's imitation does little to flatter Piniella

Ozzie Guillen regaled the media before Sunday night's game with his Lou Piniella impersonation. Mostly it contained Guillen backing up while talking, swearing once in a while and complaining about the Chicago media.

Before Piniella did his pregame news conference in the dugout, Guillen walked up and wished him luck the rest of the year, then launched into his Lou impression again.

"Look at all these people here," Guillen said in a fake Piniella voice. "Jeez."

Piniella laughed it off. What did he think of Guillen's impersonation? "If you hang around with Ozzie long enough, you don't think," he replied.
